Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I just dropped a nice shiny 1oz gold maple on the floor and it has a dent in the top edge. :thumpdown
Does this affect the value? I'm only looking for spot price here. |
Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
thats a good question. hmm...
if I were a buyer and I was looking at paying a $35 premium for a coin, why wouldn't I just go get one that is in mint condition? in times of high demand, like during the last month, it probably doesn't matter if the coin has a dent. people will pay premium because they are scarce. but ultimately, the coin is worth as much as you can scam someone to pay for it. |

The RCM store here in town replaces damaged bullion for free. I'll PM you the address so you can send it in.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I'd honestly never dropped one before. It made a nice noise but now is has a dent on the edge just above the II in Elizabeth!
Still, an ounce of gold is an ounce of gold. |

And remember, it is always worth an Ounce of Gold. Try to remember how the gold started out. Those really ugly placer nugets with all those unsightly bumps. The nerve of them! Maranatha, |
Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
Yes, I'm in it for the long term. Gold is going to $1650++ in my view.
And yes, I do think that the damage will be pretty irrelevant. After all, even if I took a hammer to the coin it would still be an ounce of gold. |
Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
It`s still worth an ounce. That said I like to put the 24k coins.. Maples, Buffalo's etc in capsules for just that reason...dropping:D The 22k coins such as GAE`s are much tougher.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
Are you a bullion investor or a coin collector? Because if you are a numismatist and cared about this coin, I must ask how you were handling it in bare hands and were careless enough to drop it on the floor. Me, on the other hand, I like to handle all my bullion by examining it and reading the various dates, producers, and symbols on them, and have no concerns if I get some scratches or even dents (as long as they don't reduce weight!) because they are simply BULLION.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
Indeed. Dropping a coin does not diminish its melt value in the least.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I put all gold including krugs in airtites.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
Some of these responses are nonsense. Of course this affects its value. It's a premium coin that has now lost some of its premium attraction.
Right now a dealer will pay about $935 for an undented Maple, and $915 for a 1-oz gold bar. When a dealer sees the dent, he's likely to shave $5-10 off his offer to you. Not the end of the world, but to answer your question: yes. |

I believe that makes sense of some of the responses you may consider to be nonsense. |

Chalk it up to experience and have a beer. I remember a few mishaps and they were my fault completely. Experience is a great teacher as long as the lesson isn't too expensive.
Take care, Mod1 |

32mm will hold a Krug as well as a GAE. And lastly, putting Krugs in Air-Tites seems silly to me, but to each his own. :bear_tongue: :D |

:D Seriously, you won't get a premium for it, but you should be able to sell it for the Gold. |
Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
Don't worry, I bit into my gold Maple just to make sure it's real gold. I suggest you try the same, can't be sure these days, and who trusts those damned machines when you have your teeth?

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I got a couple of proof kookaburra coins at spot because they were marred/scratched/ dented, still very nice coins and still worth spot.:bull-buddy-icon:For gold, I'll take the less pure items please.:bear_w00t:

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I think this brings up a pretty valid issue here which is the difference between collectors and investors. Some say there is none, and while I can't say I disagree completely, I think a lot of people end up making poor decisions without enough knowledge about the difference between them.
For example, I see listed on APMEX "proof silver eagles out of case, handled, dirty, etc" only $7 over spot. Now to me, that is not a great deal, because you are paying a large premium for a coin that although was struck as a proof, has not been treated so, and is thus dirty and damaged. To me that defeats the purpose of owning, and paying the premium for, a proof eagle. That's just one example of blurring the line between investment and collecting for pleasure. However, that's just my two cents. |
Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I use the 32 mm airtites without the black rings.

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I didn't drop them, just jingled them, and now they are all scratched up.
That .99X gold is so soft. Guess any numismatic premiums is all gone :D I feel an urge now to go and buy more stuff to jingle. That is the downside of premium coins I guess, don't jingle. |

Re: Dropped Gold maple on floor (woops)
I did that once. Worse, I dropped it on the pavement. So it lost some value of course. But not below melt value.
24K is a love/hate relationship, they are cool looking but you have to baby them and not so much take them out from the plastic holders. |
